2013 NHL Draft Rankings – War Room June Edition – Round 4

Guest post by Eldon MacDonald (edited by @ChrisRalphTHW)

This is the first of four posts highlighting the top 120 prospects for this year’s entry draft in June in Newark, New Jersey – the 2013 NHL Draft Rankings: War Room June Edition.

There have been only been a few changes to the round 4 crowd from last month’s edition of the rankings.

  • Peter Cehlárik, Luleå, has moved up to 91 from 101. On second reflection, Peter has just has too many skills and too much size not to go to the head of round four. His skating is not really that bad even though it has come in for some criticism. The real question is: should he go even higher?
  • Remi Elie, London – I watched him closely at the Memorial Cup; he just has too much speed, too much size and too much energy not to be ranked in at least round four. I have him at 112.

Historic Success Rate

As noted last month, some of these guys will pan out as planned but historically only about 19% or 6 players from below will make it as full time NHLers.

Round 4 – Players Ranked 91 to 120

91. Cehlárik, Peter

  • Hashtag: SlovakianStar
  • Team: #26, Luleå, Elitserien (top Swedish professional league), Sweden
  • Position: Left Wing
  • Shoots: Left
  • Height: 6’2
  • Weight: 192 lb.
  • Born: Zilina, Slovakia, 2-Aug-95
  • Other rankings: NHL 159
  • Twitter A/C: None found

  • Quote: Jonathan Briggins at DobberSports.com, “The Slovak winger is 6-2 and 192 pounds. He spent this past season moving up through Lulea’s two junior leagues and eventually onto Lulea in the Swedish Elite League (SEL), the highest level of hockey in the country. There he posted three goals and three assists in eight games. He played well for Slovakia’s U18 team in Sochi this past April, scoring twice and adding five assists in six games. Keep an eye to see which NHL team drafts him and how high he goes. A team that has done its homework could end up with a nice project on its hands.”

  • Quote 1: Ryan Kennedy @ TheHockeyNews.com, “Burnsville had a tough schedule right out the gate, but Kivihalme has still produced consistently with two goals and five points through four games. The offensive defenseman has good size, but it’s his Phil Housley-esqueskating that has scouts buzzing about the ColoradoCollege commit. Draft eligible in 2013.”
  • Quote 2:My March War Room Comments at THW“Top rated high school defenseman by NHL Central Scouting (three places higher than Tommy Vannelli). Teemu possesses elite skating and very good passing skills. Like most high schoolers, needs to pack on some pounds to be effective going up the ladder. By the way, his Dad is the coach of the team.”

  • Other rankings:NHL 109
  • Twitter A/C: None found

  • Quote 1: GrahamNeysmith @ TheScouting Report,  “He’s so good, he’s projected to be HPK’s senior team’s backup goaltender next season – as an 18 year old! The only drawback is his size, 5’10”, 181 pounds. All in all, he is the best draft eligible goalie in Europe.
  • Quote 2: My March War Room Comments atTHW, “Smallish goaltender with minuscule goals against and high save %. Rated the top European goaltender by NHL Central Scouting. The high emphasis placed on size for today’s NHL goaltenders makes this guy a difficult person to place in the draft.  A player to watch in the international tournaments coming up, especially the U18.” Update: U18 World’s MVP goaltender.

  • Quote 1: Steve Ewen @ TheProvince.com, “Houck, 18, a second-year Giant, does the heavy lifting on a nightly basis for the Giants besides providing offence. The right winger gets in the corners. He battles in front of the net. He fights. He even wins his share of faceoffs. If you get any regular proximity to the team, you find out that he’s a guy not afraid to keep others accountable.
  • Quote 2: My March War Room Comments at THW, “Potential 3rd line winger with energy, grit, reasonable offense; consistently one of Vancouver’s (my former home town) top players even when the others are not very good.”

Harms was rated No. 113 on Central Scouting’s midterm list and finished the 2012-13 season with 23 goals and 63 points in 60 games.”

  • Quote:Ryan Kennedy at TheHockeyNews.com, “It’s pretty simple math right now: when Hill gets on the scoresheet, Chicago wins. The 6-foot-6, 225-pound beast has three points in his past five games and is starting to get comfortable after spending most of the year at Hotchkiss Prep school in Connecticut. Hill isn’t afraid to play mean and his overall physical tools will be intriguing for NHL teams this summer. Draft eligible in 2013.”

100. Butcher, Will

  • Hashtag: MrQuarterback

  • Quote 1: Chris Peters at United StatesofHockey.com,“Butcher has shown good puck skills and terrific distribution ability throughout the tournament, which has helped in all zones. He’s a catalyst in transition and a threat in the offensive zone. Butcher is still prone to take some risks to the puck, but hasn’t made many costly mistakes. He has good instincts with the puck on his stick. Additionally, he’s been pretty sound defensively.”
  • Quote 2: Steve Reznik @ THW, A very skilled offensive defenseman, Butcher has a great first pass out of the zone, hockey sense, and the ability to quarterback a powerplay with keen precision.  He has great stickwork that gets him out of trouble and can turn on a dime and explode down the ice.”

  • Other rankings: NHL 82, Chris Ralph 84
  • Profile:Lisa McRitchie at KuklasCorner.com
  • Quote 1: Steve Ewenat of TheProvince.com, “The Vancouver Giants’ rugged blueliner (Geertsen) is one of the precious few bright spots in what’s been a dismal season so far for the WHL club. He’s big, strong and mean. He plays a mature, solid game. He’ll never be a power-play quarterback, but he’s no egg-and-spooner (stealing a lacrosse term) when he’s got the puck either. He makes a smart, swift first pass. He’s said to be a leader, said to be a potential captain one day.”
  • Quote 2: My December War Room Comments at THW,More of a player mover than a puck mover, Mason shows that big man belligerence, those hard-won physical battles and that fighting ability that teams love to see in a big defenseman. There is still plenty of work to do to round out his game but the basis is there and he excels when he keeps his game simple and raw.”

  • Quote: From Sean Lafortune @ TheProspects.Blog.com, “He (Grégoire) was strong positionally in his own zone, and looks to be a player who thinks the game. He displayed an ability to make the right decision(either positionally or with the puck) almost all of the time. He was energetic on the penalty kill, using his stick to get in passing lanes and was willing to work hard to get into passing lanes. He needs to continue to work on his mobility and first few steps. He also can struggle with his one on one elusiveness and puck skills, but the intangibles make up for it.”

But his terrific puck skills and offensive instincts have forced him up that chart, and now he’s even crashing the power play unit and producing points regularly.”
  • Quote 2: My March War Room Comments at THW,Cooled off a bit after a wowser January – still a lot to like from a guy who is just two days from being a 2014 eligible. Averaged sized player with a more simple game that effectively gets his team out of trouble with good decision-making and the clean outlet pass. His skating allows him to have a good offensive game moves the puck well and is fairly careful to never do too much in the attack zone.
