The Edmonton Oilers were started in 1971 as one of the founding franchises of the World Hockey Association (WHA). After seven WHA seasons, which included a loss to the Winnipeg Jets in the last Avco Cup Final, the Oilers were one of the four teams to merge with the NHL. The Oilers experienced immediate success in the NHL by qualifying for the playoffs in their first 13 seasons, winning five Stanley Cups in the process. The 1980s Oilers teams were some of the best in league history and featured some of hockey’s most legendary names, including Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, and Paul Coffey. The 1990s were less kind to them and the team bottomed out in the 2010s, which resulted in them earning multiple first-overall picks, including Connor McDavid, who by all intents and purposes is the modern-day Gretzky.

Kings’ Path to Avoiding Elimination vs. Oilers

The Los Angeles Kings are down in their Round 1 series against the Edmonton Oilers. They suffered a tough Game 1 loss, fought back with a great Game 2 win, got blown out in Game 3, and nearly won Game 4. While the Oilers are favored on paper, the series is not over, and the Kings will need more from some of their key players to get back in the series. Kevin Fiala Kevin Fiala played in all 82 regular season games for Los Angeles this past season, scoring 29 goals and 73 points. He was a key winger in…

It won’t be long before former Edmonton Oilers coach Jay Woodcroft lands on his feet again and is an NHL bench boss. It seems like every other day there is news throughout the league that a coach has been fired, the latest being Dave Hakstol of the Seattle Kraken. Woodcroft was and is a good coach who got caught up in a tailspin for the Oilers early in the 2023-24 season. To many, he was a scapegoat and was fired, even though he had a lot left to give. The Oilers understood at the time he wasn’t to blame. But,…

Oilers Are Better Built for a Deep Playoff Run Than in Years Past

The 2023–24 edition of the Edmonton Oilers give off a different energy than years past. They are the oldest team in the NHL, and their veteran maturity and playoff experience show on the ice. They have learned through past failures what is required to win in the Stanley Cup Playoffs: a team-wide commitment to defence. Their composure as a group is evident in the way they defend, and that’s the most significant difference with this season’s Oiler team. Defence and goaltending have been Edmonton’s undoing in the past several postseasons. They failed to prevent more than three goals per game…
