The Buffalo Sabres were established in 1970, along with the Vancouver Canucks, when the league expanded to 14 teams. Brothers Seymour and Northrup Knox, whose grandfather founded Woolworth’s department store, started the Sabres franchise. The team’s first game was played on Oct. 10, 1970, against the Pittsburgh Penguins, which they won 2-1. Although the Sabres have yet to win a Stanley Cup, they have qualified for the postseason 29 times and reached the Stanley Cup Final twice, once in 1975 and again in 1999.
