2013 NHL Entry Draft

Location:Prudential Center (Newark, NJ)Held:June 30, 2013
First Overall Pick:Nathan MacKinnonPlayers With NHL Experience:103

The 2013 NHL Entry Draft was the 51st NHL Entry Draft. All seven rounds of the draft took place on June 30, 2013, at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. The top three selections were Nathan MacKinnon going to the Colorado Avalanche, Aleksander Barkov going to the Florida Panthers, and Jonathan Drouin going to the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Who Are the Biggest Steals of the 2013 NHL Draft?

The biggest steal is hands-down Dominik Kubalik who was drafted by the Los Angeles Kings in the seventh round. After six seasons in the Czech League and Swiss League, he joined the Chicago Blackhawks and was a 30-goal scorer by the end of the 2019-20 season, and already has 10 goals and 22 points in 29 games in 2020-21.

Not far behind is Andreas Johnsson, who was drafted in the seventh round by the Toronto Maple Leafs. He was a 20-goal scorer during the 2018-19 season and although he has yet to hit that total again, he is still an everyday NHL player, which is rare for someone selected so late in the draft.

Who Were the Biggest Busts of the 2013 NHL Draft?

There weren’t many busts in the 2013 draft, that’s why Samuel Morin (Flyers, 11th overall), Emile Poirer (Flames, 22nd overall), and Hunter Shinkaruk (Canucks, 24th overall) stick out so much. They all were highly-touted first-round picks, but have yet to make their mark in the NHL. Shinkaruk played 15 games in the NHL before moving to the KHL, Poirer played eight and bounced around the AHL before moving to the Slovak league and Morin is looking more and more like an injury stop-gap for the Flyers rather than an everyday NHL defenceman.
